Consensual Design - the Hermitage LA
May 2024
Consensual Design is a sensory installation reimaging the artists relationship with trauma, the spaces they shared, and where they sit in their body.
“My experience is centered in places I once felt safe - that uneasiness of occupying two realties. A floor that sinks under foot but is inviting to sit and stay; a foreboding consumptive shape that leans forward and swallows. While the installation draws pracitical memory to a beach at night, the piece as a whole is intended to mirror a space that is more internal than external, using the scent of orange and orange blossom as a symbolic grounding element.
In my choice to reengage with these spaces, I am an active participant in in their unwinding and reweaving. The garden will clear of guests, the walls returned to white. As the scent of oranges fade from the stretcher, the linen floor is molded into a new painting - reclaiming and giving dignity to the material, the memory, and the alchemaic process of making”
